HBV positive result should not be sole basis for rejecting job applicants

Message from the President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Having started as a member of the board and now serving as an officer of the Hepatology Society of the Philippines (HSP), I can't help but look back at the changes of not only the landscape of the diseases that Hepatologists are dealing with in their everyday practice, but also at the positive influences that the society has had in the public and government perception of liver diseases. The very successful B-aware campaign has not only provided people who visit the FB page (https://www.facebook.com/BeAwarePH) the needed knowledge and guidance on dealing with viral hepatitis, but it has also empowered them to speak out, ask questions and seek help. The impact of HSP has also been felt in the government sector where the initial momentum gathered from the publication of a policy against discrimination of hepatitis B-positive workers (Hepatitis B workplace policy & program.doc) by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has now cascaded into the formation of the Viral Hepatitis Technical Working Group headed by the Department of Health. It is hoped that this collaboration with the DOH will lead to lasting and meaningful policies towards the eradication of the stigma and disease of viral hepatitis.

Despite all these changes through the years, one thing has been constant and this is that HSP remains to be at the forefront of education and empowerment of physicians who are the first to see patients with liver disease by hosting CME activities. Below are some of the planned and ongoing CME activities for the year:

Ongoing : Hepatology Webinar (HSP website)
June 28, 2017 : Viral Hepatitis Workshop (Cebu Grand Convention Center)
July 27, 2017 : Taking Hepatitis B to the Finish Line: The Hepatitis B Vaccine Summit (Hotel Seda Vertis North)
August 10, 2017 : Viral Hepatitis Workshop (Baguio – venue to be finalized)
September 2017 : Viral Hepatitis Workshop (Venue and date to be finalized)
Jan 25-26, 2018 : HSP Biennial Convention (Hotel Seda Vertis North)

In behalf of the entire board of the Hepatology Society of the Philippines, I would like to welcome you to participate in our activities, and also to explore our website and links as I'm sure you will find something useful.

May the Lord Jesus continue to bless you and the HSP!

With best wishes,

STEPHEN N. WONG, MD

We are delighted to welcome you to the beautiful, International city.

Under the theme of "HCC: Strategy in the New Era", the conference program will present high-quality content based on up-to-date information and cutting edge lectures by eminent researchers, in order to reconfirm the achievement of better basic and clinical practice in the field of HCC.

The scientific program will consist of invited lectures, plenary sessions, symposia, and free papers on significant developments on the theme of "HCC: Strategy in the New Era". The program will also provide the latest information and fresh ideas for hepatologists.
